OUR MISSION
Redefining Experiential Science
The Sleep Consciousness Institute (SCI) is a non-profit research and education institution that aims to bring a novel, evidence-based neurophenomenological approach to the understanding and experimentation with Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs).
SCI offers a range of powerful workshops, 101 VIP coachings, and free online webinars to deepen our understanding of ourselves, our world, and our purpose through the lens of Out-of-Body Experiences, bridging cutting-edge research in neuroscience, sleep medicine, and psychedelics to inspire transformative practices.
SCI’s objective is to apply neuroscientific knowledge to enable you to experience for yourself—through empirical methodologies—the power of non-ordinary states and help you deepen your journey wherever you are.
Our programs are expertly designed by Rodrigo Montenegro, MSc. in Neuroscience, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Sleep Medicine from Oxford University and expertise in neuropsychology and neuromodulation medicine (PGCert.). Rodrigo has facilitated OBE workshops worldwide for over 21 years and is currently completing his PhD, advancing research on the neurophysiology and phenomenology of OBEs.
OUR EXPERTISE
At the Forefront of Consciousness Research
Rodrigo has worked in the field of consciousness and non-ordinary state research with the Coma Science Group, associated with the Brain Center², a specialised unit that studies near-death experiences, and the Sensation and Perception Research Group (SPRG), a research group that studies self-induced cognitive trance and clinical hyponosis. He is currently conducting research on non-ordinary states of consciousness in association with the Swiss Institute of Noetic Sciences (ISSNOE) and in an equal partnership with the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). Rodrigo has worked as a consultant for the University of California, providing insights into OBE research, and was selected as a finalist in the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation's call for research proposals from among more than 3,000 applicants.
Rodrigo has worked in the field with pioneering historical institutions such as the International Institute of Projectiology (IIP), a federally funded public institution founded in 1994 by Dr Waldo Vieira, a pioneering researcher in the phenomenological study of OBEs and he was one of the founding members of the International Academy of Consciousness (IAC), where he served on the board of directors for 16 years and as a lead instructor. Rodrigo has volunteered with institutions such as the International Association for Near-Death Experience Studies (IANDS-France), and he is currently the CEO of Gamma Wave Technologies Ltd., where he serves as a Med-Tech and lead neuroscientist, developing a clinical-grade sleep headband with neuromodulation capabilities (Class I medical device).
Rodrigo has given international lectures on the subject of non-ordinary states at the Society of Psychical Research (SPR) as well as at its Scottish branch, the International Metapsychic Institute (IMI), giving lectures at the Institute for Research on Extraordinary Experiences (INREES), and has given lectures at congresses such as the "1st Congress on the Science of Consciousness", where he had the privilege of debating the subject of OBEs with recognized personalities in the field, such as Dr. Olaf Blanke, and at the "Breaking Convention" at the University of Greenwich, a biennial multidisciplinary conference on psychedelic consciousness, also presenting his research on OBE-related topics at various universities.
Rodrigo has been featured in acclaimed documentaries such as "Out-of-body experiences" and Inexploré's documentary odyssey, "Sleep: An Essential for Regeneration", which explores the vital role of sleep in well-being, regeneration, and personal transformation. Rodrigo has also been featured in a documentary, "Consciousness and Science", filmed at CERN, alongside leading thinkers in the field, including Nobel laureates such as Roger Penrose, to discuss the nature of consciousness and OBEs. His work has also been highlighted in numerous online and television interviews, as well as in international magazines.
OUR EXPERIENCE
First-hand empirical experience supported by science
Rodrigo has coached workshops internationally on non-ordinary states of consciousness and OBEs since 2005. His own experiences were emphasized in his book “Out-of-the-Body Experiences − An Experiential Anthology”, which highlights ninety OBE phenomena in accounts collected worldwide and reflects his personal inductions of OBEs since the age of 19.
Rodrigo's PhD research is associated with the neurophysiological correlates of OBE phenomena, proposing an extended phenomenological approach and new neurophysiological OBE models. He is currently researching the Vibrational State and the neurophysiological correlates of OBEs on gifted subjects, as well as carrying out experimental research on the neuromodulation of OBEs through precise multi-focal tES (transcranial Electric Stimulation). He is equally pursuing innovative research on psychedelics, such as N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), considering their potential and limitations for the induction of OBEs.
